Will all christians endure to the end? If so, how will they? There are many people who would answer those two questions incorrectly or at least partially incorrect. I hope to assert the proper answers to both of those questions.
Because God supernaturally saved us from our sin, we can have confidence that he will supernaturally keep us in our salvation. A child of God does not fall away from God, although they may go through seasons of great falls.
This is important to keep in mind as we live the Christian life because there are some who have intentionally or even unintentionally kept people in bondage to a form of legalism that teaches a Christian can lose what Christ has ultimately purchased for them.
Modern pop theological thought has taught that man is autonomous and because of this, his will is the ultimate decider as to whether or not he goes to heaven or hell. Many professing Christians have been sold a fake bag of goods that teaches the false doctrine that a person must not only work to make themselves right with God, but they must also work to keep themselves right with God.
Now before I get accused for teaching a “grace filled” gospel let me be perfectly clear that a person who has truly been born again will fight his or her sin vehemently . The life that they live will be made evident to all who see them. There will be something radically different about who they are now in comparison to who they were prior to their conversion. Their passions will be different because their hunger has been satisfied.
We were at one time characterized by a love for the world; the flesh; and the devil, but now we long for Christ and want nothing more than to be made more like him. Let me be clear – the promises that God has given his people in the scriptures do not create a sense of “La-Z-boy” Christianity in us, but rather they give the child of God and unwavering confidence knowing that we are excepted by God through Christ alone.
This propels us into a grace-filled lifestyle that joyfully takes action. So now, Christians are free to obey God knowing that his love for us is unchanging based on the sacrifice of Christ death and resurrection on our behalf.
Rather then being motivated to work in order to keep ourselves right with God; christians work from the position of knowing that we have been made right with God through Christ.
In the same way that no unregenerate man can earn favor with God so likewise no Christian can keep himself saved because of his good works.
The Christian does good works because the seed of Christ righteousness has been given to us. We cannot earn favor with God and we cannot keep favor with God on the basis of our good works. All glory belongs to Christ for his work which is now considered our works by faith.
Yet again we are humbled in knowing that from beginning to end-election to glorification and everything else in between is all of the Lord. As a result, we can confidently know that all Christians will endure to the end, and in light of this let us be encouraged by the words of Paul found in the book of Philippians.
“Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”
Philippians 2:12-13 KJV
